Tradies Survival Guide for Winter

As a tradie, working in cold and harsh winter conditions can present unique challenges. However, with proper preparation and the right strategies in place, you can not only stay warm and comfortable, but also maintain productivity on the job. In this winter guide, we will share valuable tips and tricks to help tradies conquer the winter season and thrive in their work and keep your team strong healthy with reduced sick days.

1. Layer Up for Optimal Warmth: Layering is the key to staying warm as the temperature drops. Swap the singlets for long sleeves, such a moisture-wicking base layer that helps regulate body temperature and keeps you dry. Add insulating mid-layers, such as fleece hoodies and pullovers, followed by a windproof and water-resistant outer layer to protect against the elements.

We have a range of high-quality cold-weather workwear designed specifically for tradies. Look for durable, insulated jackets, pants, and coveralls that provide ample protection and freedom of movement.

Workwear clothing can be purchased and delivered to your door from our website

2. Protect Your Extremities: Don't forget about your extremities – hands, feet, and head. Invest in well-insulated gloves that allow dexterity and grip, thermal socks to keep your feet warm, and a snug-fitting beanie or hat to retain body heat. Remember it never hurts to pack a spare!

Where gloves are not suitable, hand warmers and heating packs can be a lifesaver. These small disposable heat sources in your pockets or gloves can provide instant warmth to your hands or other areas of the body that are susceptible to cold.

3. Boots Boots Boots: Beat the cold and slippery conditions, by protecting yourself and your team with properly fitted safety boots and high quality socks. Good insulation is essential to prevent cold feet and crucial for health and safety standards.

When you’re on the hunt for the best pair of boots, keep these things in mind:

• Reinforced toes to resist crushing
• Shock absorbing soles
• Materials such as vulcanised rubber or latex neoprene to keep moisture out
• Flexibility to allow freedom of movement
• Breathability to ensure comfort during long shifts
• Protection against chemicals and other wear and tear.

4. Stay Hydrated and Nourished: Your diet might not be an obvious factor for keeping you cosy (although there’s nothing to say a thermos of coffee or hot lunch won’t help), but winter conditions can lead to dehydration, so it's still important to drink plenty of water throughout the day. Additionally, pack nutritious snacks that provide sustained energy and warmth, such as trail mix or protein bars. Proper hydration and nutrition will help maintain focus and energy levels.

5. Safety is Key: With shorter daylight hours during winter, visibility can be reduced on worksites. Ensure proper lighting by using high-quality headlamps, portable work lights, or well-positioned fixed lighting. Good visibility is crucial for safety and maintaining productivity in low-light conditions.

Stay updated on weather forecasts and any potential hazards. Be prepared to adjust your work schedule or take additional precautions if extreme weather conditions are expected. Prioritize your safety and that of your team.

And it should go without saying that extreme weather is reason enough for anyone to stop work until the storm passes. Whether it’s winds, hail or icy conditions, your workplace should no doubt have a weather policy in place that will inform when it’s necessary to put down the tools, turn off the machinery and head indoors.

6. Maintain Tools, Equipment and vehicles: Cold weather can affect the performance of tools and equipment. Keep them in good working condition by storing them properly, protecting them from moisture, and lubricating moving parts regularly. Cold temperatures can also cause battery-powered tools to lose charge faster, so have spare batteries on hand.

Your vehicle is what gets you to these jobs. So ensuring tyres, battery, wipers, lights and of course heaters are serviced and in good working condition is essential. Check in with your mechanic.

We hope you can all keep warm, safe and comfortable this winter and soldier through the cooler weather this winter! Remember, it’s better to be safe than sorry. Pack that extra jacket, pair sock and snack... you might just need it!
